Things are Changing…

Things are Changing…

Boy how life has changed in just a week. We are still in Marathon, FL and will continue to hang here for a while longer….

Just after my last post we were told our marina was closed – no more incoming transient boats! The next morning, we were informed that the County of Monroe, which is ALL of the Keys, ordered a shut-down on all short-term rentals (hotels, vacation homes, RV parks, marina’s, etc.).  The order issued (3/19), stated that if you didn’t have a rental agreement for 28 days or longer you had until 6:00 PM on Sunday (3/22) to leave The Keys. Yikes! People were scrambling. Marinas and fuel stops were closing daily.

Hmmm, what do we do? Fortunately, we had talked to the dockmaster a couple of weeks ago about extending our stay for another month. We definitely decided to take advantage of the extension and feel very lucky to have secured a place to stay. We will take our friend’s (Flip Flop) slip. They decided to leave for Palm Beach where they will be closer to family.  Their boat is larger than Scout so they can go on the “outside” rather than staying on the ICW which will be faster. They also carry about four times the fuel we do so the likelihood of them being stranded by closures is doubtful. They were able to secure a privately-owned slip that they had rented last year.

So Flip Flop and crew took off this morning (3/26) and we will move to their slip tomorrow where we will continue to ride out this pandemic. It’s a beautiful place with sunny skies, temperatures in the 70’s and 80’s, nice breezes and clear water. There are worse places to be stranded, right?

Hope everyone is healthy and safe.

    1. Nice to hear from you Kathy. So far so good…
Hope you Craig and the family are safe and healthy as well and enjoying some “alone” time.
      Hugs.

  1. Well I’m stuck in place now, visit to Hannah’s postponed til the end of April/beginning of May when she has the baby, so I took off hiking the wilderness today, along the Deschutes and it was glorious, a few other people out, definitely cold and still a bit of snow on the ground, but at least, for now, we have the great outdoors. Be safe, so glad you have a ‘home’ to stay at, and be well Sharon and Mike, sending best wishes always xx

    1. Oh no Jane! I know you were looking forward to seeing Hannah and you must be so disappointed. Good idea to take a hike in beautiful Bend and breath in some fresh air and get some exercise. I am so sorry you had to postpone your trip. Sending you happy thoughts

    1. Thanks Bruce. We’re doing fine here in Marathon. We were able to secure a slip for another month so will be here until the end of April. Hopefully things will get better and we can start moving again. We’ll see what it looks like in the next couple of weeks. In the meantime I’m learning new recipes, playing solitaire, cleaning and organizing the boat and Michael is doing lots and lots of boat projects. The weather has been great and we have a couple of great boat neighbors. Donnie, our next door neighbor, plays the guitar and sings so we’ve gotten the benefit of free concerts – He’s really good. So life isn’t too bad:)
Hope things are good for you….
Hugs and stay happy and healthy!

  2. Sharon and Mike,
Just checking in to hear how things are with you guys. Good to know you are in a good place—no telling how long this Corvid-19 issue will last.
    Cheers
    Dennis

    1. Thanks for checking in. Yeah, it’s a little like being a “prisoner in paradise” here on the island of Marathon. Beautiful but we’d like to be moving again. The virus is pretty mild here which we’re thankful for. So we’re just doing boat projects and “sheltering in place” like everyone else.
Hope you guys are healthy and happy. Miss you! Hugs!
