Hunkered Down…..

Hunkered Down…..

Hi friends –just touching base. Hope this finds you all safe and healthy as we navigate these unusual and scary times.

We are still in Marathon, FL at least until the end of this month. We are hunkered down and trying to abide by the new directives – “wash your hands” “shelter in place” “isolate” “social distancing” “don’t go anywhere”, etc.

Again……we are trying to decide if we will stay in Marathon or if we will go.  Marathon is pretty much the end of the road, the last stop before Key West. It’s also fairly isolated. We were told that if you have a major medical emergency, you will probably need to be airlifted out which would be about a 45- minute helicopter ride to the hospital in Miami. While we’re fine and not expecting to have to take advantage of a helicopter ride, it’s something to think about.

Our other option is to head north again. We’re told some of the marinas are closing and it might be hard to get fuel so???? Do we go or do we stay? We have a few more days to make our decision. Will keep you posted….

Michael is passing the time doing boat projects. I’m passing the time trying new recipes. I’m learning to cook without meat since there’s no meat in the stores. Hopefully we don’t have to learn to take care of ‘another need’ because the toilet paper shelves are bare as well.

  1. Keep your fuel and food supplies topped off and stay at anchor where possible. Scout may prove to be your safe haven. Take care and our prayers are with you.

    1. Thanks Tom. Nice to hear from you and hope all is well at your Club. These are definitely interesting time but hopefully this will end sooner than later.
      All the best to you.

  2. Hi Bythewood’s, Happy Spring. It’s raining here but soon it will be a pretty Spring sight that we will get to see out of our windows. I’m thinking of sightseeing my garage this weekend for a little outing since we’ve been instructed to “shelter in place”. All 40 million of us. Luckily I checked out a few good books before all the libraries closed. Ann Patchett’s new book The Dutch House is excellent. Oh, and I’ve heard that cabbage soup with ketchup is pretty good if you heat it up real hot. Well, guess I’ll go and dust another shelf or two. Miss you, your bud, Pen

    1. Hi Penny, I see you still have your wonderful sense of humor! Will try the cabbage soup – oops – don’t have any cabbage.
Miss you too! Stay safe and try not to go crazy!!!!

  3. Strange times indeed! Glad to hear you and Mike are doing well. It seems like we are all adrift in our own little private Idaho’s right about now… lol! That said, PLOBRA’s pitch has been canceled, brokers open etc. Not to mention all the family events, weddings, reunions etc. All very sad. I have been basically quarantined since the 5th which is when I had my knee surgery. Never thought a surf check would be the highlight of my day! All aside though, we have everything we need and David has been a champion at getting me through. You two take care & looking forward to the next update.

    1. Hi Michelle, nice to hear from you. Yeah, interesting about PLOBRA and open houses – I guess no one is interested in real estate right now anyway. It is so sad about the cancellations and people out of work. So, you got a head start on the “social distancing” and “isolation”. Hope you are recovering nicely from your surgery. Relax and you and David stay healthy!

  4. Seems that you have a good place to call home. You might tell Mike to take up fishing again.

If the TP runs out at least the water is warm 🙂

    1. Hi Carl, nice to hear from you. We have to get a fishing pole first:). Yep, you’re right about the warm water – hopefully we won’t have to test it.
How are you and Serene managing?

      1. We are both working for home; doing a lot of cooking. But all is good. We had happy hour with Heather last night. she sat on her porch and us on ours; we just talked really loud :).

        1. Darn! Sorry we missed that Happy Hour. Say hi (from a distance) to all the neighbors for us.
Glad to hear you can work from home and would love to share some of that good cooking.
          Hugs!
