Yep, we’re moving again….

Yep, we’re moving again….

After two weeks of being tethered to a slip at New Bern Grand Marina and Yacht Club, we were raring to get Scout back out on the water and continue our adventure. Tuesday (8/27) morning we released our lines, called the bridge tender to request the Cunningham Bridge be opened, then headed north. We decided to make our way to the Outer Banks before heading to the Chesapeake Bay. Our first stop was an anchorage called Broad Creek #2 outside…

Bye Bye Campbell Creek…

Bye Bye Campbell Creek…

We had a wonderful three night (8/9-8/11) stay with Beth and Rip in Campbell Creek. Left this morning (8/12) around 7:30 for Oriental, NC then on to New Bern, NC. Yep, we’re retracing our tracks and going back where we came from. Seems counter productive but Michael is flying out of New Bern Thursday and it made more sense economically and logistically for me and the doggies to stay in New Bern. We had a pretty rocky-rolly ride on Pamlico…

Prettier…Prettier…and Prettier……

Prettier…Prettier…and Prettier……

We spent three nights (Tuesday 8/6-Thursday 8/8) on the hook in the cove at the Island of Ocracoke, NC. The first night was delightful. So calm, quiet and beautiful. The second was a different story altogether. Out of the blue a mighty storm came billowing in around midnight. It started pouring rain with lots of lightning, thunder booms and big wind gusts, some maybe as much as 35 knots. It certainly got our attention. At one point, Michael started the…

Who says there’s no free lunch?….

Who says there’s no free lunch?….

Monday morning (8/5) we waited for the bridge restriction (6:30-8:30 am) to lift, requested an opening, and departed New Bern Grand Marina and Yacht Club at about 8:45. We had decided to set out and explore the “Outer Banks” area. Rather than travel one reeeaaallly long day we decided to break it up into two shorter days which meant following our tracks back to Oriental, NC. We remembered there were a couple of “free” docks just a few hundred feet…

Lights on…but…no one home….

Lights on…but…no one home….

We’ve been in New Bern, NC since Monday, 7/30. As I mentioned previously, you just never know what to expect before arriving at a new anchorage. Sometimes it’s better, sometimes worse and sometimes just different. As we approached New Bern Grand Marina and Yacht Club (it’s not really a yacht club) we were surprised to see remnants of a marina to our port side that was destroyed by hurricane Florence. Once secure in our slip we hopped off the boat…

A Live Mermaid…..

A Live Mermaid…..

A bit of a lazy day (Friday, 7/26) here in Oriental, N.C. We met our dock neighbors Mary and Chip who arrived today aboard “Cruzin Waves”, a Mainship 34. They said they are commonly known as “half-backs” because they are from the northeast, moved to Cape Coral Florida for a while then just moved to New Bern, N.C. which is about “half-way back” from where they originally came from. Really nice folks who are only here until tomorrow. Also met…

Obstacles along the way….

Obstacles along the way….

A bit more excitement on this journey to Beaufort, NC. We left Topsail around 7:10 am (Tuesday, 7/23) since we had a longer sail today. Our first encounter – hey, what’s that BIG tug/barge doing perpendicular to the channel and blocking oncoming traffic??  Tried to hail the BIG guy on the VHF but no answer. Finally, he slowly pushed his barge closer to shore allowed us to pass in the channel. Two and one-half hours into the trip we entered…

In Search of Cooler Weather….

In Search of Cooler Weather….

It’s unbelievably hot here. For all of our “left” coast friends – we miss the consistent 72-degree daytime temperatures and 68-degree nighttime temps.  We’re truly jealous!  On the “right” coast we’re experiencing constant heat indexes in the 110 degree “muggy” range. FYI: we hung a damp towel outside to dry, for eight hours, and it never did dry out! Anyway, we left Southport Marina in North Carolina on Friday (7/19) morning for a short two-hour cruise and landed at Federal…

Beautiful…..

Beautiful…..

On this adventure you never really know what the day will present to you. Today (Wednesday, 7/17) we pulled away from the dock at Georgetown Landing Marina in Georgetown, SC about 8:00 in the morning. Our destination – Myrtle Beach Yacht Club in Myrtle Beach, SC. We were pleasantly surprised when we entered the Waccamaw River. The scenery on this deep-water river was breathtakingly beautiful with heavily wooded banks filled with moss draped cypress trees, and numerous private alcoves perfect…

Out here all alone….

Out here all alone….

Fueled up then took the doggies for a walk this morning (Tuesday, 7/16) and stopped by Boat N Hoagies for a couple of their homemade blueberry muffins. On our walk we ran into Karen from Kar E On, the Mainship that went aground yesterday. She told us the story and they really were in the wrong place at the wrong time. When they hit bottom, their prop snagged a huge anchor chain that wrapped around the prop and took a…
