What’s Next????

Hi All. We hope this finds you safe and healthy……..

It’s April 22nd and we’re still in our little Bonefish neighborhood in Marathon Florida.

We feel very fortunate that we’ve been able to move around a little and be out in the sunshine. We’ve taken Scout-About to the little private beach around the bend several times. Much needed recreation for humans and doggies.

On Thursday, April 16th, we took Scout to Sombrero Light, a local hangout, about an hour away where we picked up a mooring. When we arrived, there were about a dozen boats moored with folks relaxing, swimming, snorkeling, etc. It was a warm day, in the 90’s, and the water temperature was a cool 83 degrees, a perfect day for playing in the water while still social distancing. We stayed a couple of hours until it started getting a bit “rocky-rolly” then we headed back to the marina. It was a fun day!

The sandbar beckoned us, again, on Saturday, April 18th so, at low tide, we piled in Scout-About and followed our neighbors, Michelle and Donnie, out. It was a hot day and lots of folks had the same idea. It was a bit crowded and we saw about 20 of our Bonefish neighbors in their dinghies. The Sheriff stopped by to give us a friendly reminder that boats needed to be 50 feet apart, groups could be no larger than ten people and we should maintain social distancing. After adjusting a couple boats, we were good to go. Another extremely fun-filled day!

And Michael continues to complete boat projects! He is currently building a steering station and bench seat for Scout-About. We enjoy taking her so many places but driving using the tiller and having only one seat with two humans and two dogs is a bit uncomfortable. So, guess what, he has decided he can design and build them rather than buying a new dinghy. An ambitious project for sure. He is truly amazing!!!!

We’ve been here in Marathon for almost two months and, while it’s not a bad place to be “stuck”, we are ready to move on. It appears that restrictions are beginning to loosen a bit, so we plan to leave by the end of the month. Our plan is to head to St. Mary’s, Georgia, put Scout on the hard, rent a car/truck and drive to Bend, Oregon where we will spend the summer.

The route we have plotted looks like it will take about ten (long) travel-days. It appears that fuel is available, but most marinas are still closed so we plan to anchor most of the time. Depending on weather and lay-overs we should arrive in St. Mary’s around May 10th and our “loop” journey will temporarily shut down……

And our Bend, Oregon adventure will begin….

We will keep you posted.

  2. Some people know how to have fun even in the middle of a pandemic! Great to see you found a wonderful place to hole up for awhile. Bend has come through this extremely well. Today there are no COVID-19 patients in the hospital. Yeah!!

Looking forward to seeing the “loopers” soon!

    1. Hey Jan, Yeah, we feel pretty lucky that we can have a little fun and enjoy the outdoors during all this. Wow, that’s great news – no COVID-19 patients in the hospital in Bend. All that good living, I guess.
We are looking forward to spending some quality time enjoying Bend AND working on the house. Looking forward to seeing you! Hugs!

  3. It was fun reading your post and traveling a bit with you guys. Just a ton going on here! Wow, almost to much to put into one Comment section. Wait! I think I can summarize it . . . NOTHING HAS BEEN GOING ON.
Sigh. My worst purchase of the year has been my 2020 Planner. Have a safe trip West and maybe we can see each other this summer.

    1. Hey Penny, You are way too funny!!! We love getting your comments – makes us laugh.
Yeah, Bend is a much easier place to get to and we have lots more room so come on out and spend some time with us when we get there. Missing you. Hugs!

Looks like you got up early this morning……

      1. OK! But keep a spare key hidden somewhere . . remember when Fred had to be hoisted up, over, and through the bedroom window?! 🙂

  4. Wow! You guys have a lot planned for the days ahead! Glad you have been able to enjoy the warm weather and water! All the beaches and bay/harbor are closed here. We cant even go for a dinghy ride. All that aside we are doing well and my knee is doing great. So glad I got it done before they stopped all the elective surgeries. You’ll have to look up Jane when you get to Bend. Have fun and safe travels… keep us posted!

    1. Hey Michelle, Yep, we’ll have a full schedule once we get underway, but we’re definitely ready to start moving again.
We heard San Diego banned all recreational boating and with the Yacht Club closed it has to be pretty bad. Happy to hear your knee is healing well and, yes, you are very lucky you got in before all this chaos started.
Yeah, Jane and I have been communicating and I’m looking forward to getting together (of course at a distance) when we arrive.
All the best to you and your family – stay safe and healthy!
