Run Forrest Run…..

Run Forrest Run…..

Sadly, we left Bruce and Lady’s Island this morning (Wednesday, 7/10) around 9:00. Leaving the marina, we passed the Cowan Creek Bridge. This bridge links Lady’s Island and St. Helena Island and is just east of Beaufort. Bruce told us this is the famous bridge that Tom Hanks ran across in the movie Forrest Gump.    Run Forrest run!

We had a pretty long 7.5- hour sail today but it was a nice easy and interesting journey.  We didn’t see many boats, but we did see lots of dolphin, a shark (at least the shark’s fin), birds and, of course, lots of pretty waterfront homes. We experienced some rain and thunder and lightning along the way, but the squalls were short lived and, overall, it was a beautiful trip.

Arrived at St. John’s Yacht Harbor in Charleston, SC around 4:30, jumped off the boat for doggie walks then relaxed and had dinner aboard. Since Sandy is flying home from the Charleston airport on Sunday we decided to stay in this marina until Monday.

On Thursday (7/11) we just chilled on the boat.  We Ubered to town on Friday (7/12) and played tourist, walking around the French Quarter, the Market Area and the Historic District. Again, we saw more beautiful homes and churches.  An Uber driver told us that the reason so many of the houses in the historic district are very narrow on the street is because they used to be taxed on their frontage. So, many of those homes have small fronts but long porches on the side and some open up in the back. Corner houses received a double whammy and were taxed on both sides. Interesting!

We had lunch at Bubba Gump’s which was a bit of a tourist trap but had a huge patio overlooking the Market Area and room for the doggies. Ubered back to the boat and enjoyed a refreshing late afternoon dip in the saline pool at the marina.

Saturday (7/13) another really warm day – Sandy and I went for a morning swim in the pool while Michael baby sat the doggies, then we just chilled on the boat. Not much happened.

Today, Sunday (7/14) we were up at 4:00 am to take Sandy to the airport. The marina was kind enough to let us use the courtesy car at o-dark-thirty to take Sandy and Bella Rose to the Charleston airport for their flight back to Houston. Boo-hoo……will really miss them.  Back on the boat, the morning was spent on chores, laundry (all the linens and such.) and pump-out – all the sexy stuff associated with cruising/living on a “yacht”. Ship-shape again for the next port of call.

The plan is to leave here in the morning and stop over night at the Leland Oil Company Marina in McCellanville, SC on our way to Georgetown, SC. Will keep you posted.
