A Really Scary Time……

A Really Scary Time……

The bad and scary news  – Michael had a heart attack resulting in emergency open heart surgery to replace his aortic valve……  The good news – the attack happened in the hospital bed surrounded by a great medical team who took really good care of him.

A little back story of what happened. These are my words – it was all kind of blur and the doctors used terms that I didn’t quite understand but this is how I remember and understand how things happened:

Michael hadn’t been feeling well for a few weeks. One of the issues was his right foot swelling. It was red, tender to the touch, and he could hardly walk on it. He thought he had tweaked it when he got down in the engine room so we dismissed it. But when his right foot healed his left foot became swollen, which didn’t make any sense. He started having violent chills then a fever and was exhausted all the time, so we decided to go to urgent care here in Stuart, Florida. On Tuesday (4/16) we went to an Urgent Care facility about a block away from the boat. The Physician’s Assistant (PA) was knowledgeable and very thorough. He told us it could be the result of several things and, rather than just prescribing antibiotics, suggested we get some tests done. He sent us for x-rays, a sonogram and bloodwork and made a follow up appointment for Friday (4/19) morning.

At the follow up appointment we reviewed the test results with the PA and he noticed a couple of items that were of concern– Michael’s D-Dimer was high which could be a sign of clotting. He also noted that his blood levels were considerably low. His comment to us was that this is “above my pay grade” and recommended checking into the ER immediately. We decided to take his advice. We were able to move the boat off the mooring and into a slip in the same marina and headed for the ER that afternoon (Friday).

Once in the ER they ran more tests including scans of the lungs and heart to check for clots and didn’t find anything but decided to keep him overnight. Then on Saturday (4/20) afternoon, in the hospital bed, he had a heart attack. Fortunately, they were able to stabilize him. The cardiologist used a scope to look at his arteries. They found a clot in the central artery and were able to break it up and remove most of it. We were also advised us that he noticed something strange on his aortic valve. On Monday (4/22) he ordered a scope to look at the valve and discovered there was either an infection or clot. Monday afternoon a surgical team of five appeared at the foot of his bed and advised us they highly recommended replacing his aortic valve immediately as it was “sluffing” off stuff and could be very dangerous. They wanted to do open heart surgery the next day (Tuesday) but since he had been on blood thinners they would need to wait an extra day and would schedule it for Wednesday (4/24) morning. Whoa!  We made a few phone calls to confirm what they were telling us and were advised to take their advice.

On Wednesday (4/24) at 9:10 Michael was taken back for a surgery that took five hours. The surgeon said it was pretty bad – they found an infection and a large abscess which they were able to remove. They also installed another aortic valve. The Doctor said the surgery went well and Michael was lucky that they found it when they did.

We feel very fortunate that we were in a place with a great medical facility and very lucky to have had such great medical care.

Michael was finally released on Tuesday (4/30). Halleluiah! Snooki, The Duke and I are very happy to have him home and he says he is very happy to be back. I spent Tuesday afternoon rounding up all his prescription meds and Ubered home with a basket full of drugs. Wednesday morning we received a dock cart full of meds and supplies for the IV he will be on. A traveling nurse came later in the morning to set up the IV and teach us how to administer it into his PICC Line.

Recovery will be slow, probably six weeks to eight weeks., so we will stay here at Sunset Bay Marina in Stuart Florida for at least a month. Then we plan to resume our Great Loop Adventure.

Probably won’t post much in the next few weeks because It will probably be pretty boring. But I will update you occasionally. Hugs!!!!

  7. Hi Sharon, I was wondering why we hadn’t heard from you. So sorry to hear about Mike but relieved to hear his recovery is going well. I’m sure it was a shock to have to deal with. I’m so glad that PA realized he was in over his head… He totally did the right thing.

The pups seem to be happy and doing well. At least to came to stop in a pretty marina. Pls. give Mike our best and know we are thinking of you both.

    1. Thanks Michelle. Yes, very lucky – now rest and relaxation! Doctors say 6-8 weeks which wasn’t in the plan but this is not a bad place to hang for a while. As he gets stronger we’ll be able to Walk-About and Scout-About to explore. Doggies are doing fine but were sure missing daddy….
      Hugs!!

  8. Incredible! I had been wondering why we hadn’t heard from you. Thank heavens you were where you were and had such good medical help! Please give the big guy a hug for me and take good care you two !

  9. Sharon and Mike, What a shock. Like all your other friends we were wondering why we had not heard from you. Thank goodness you were so close to medical help and are now secure in a good marina. Did you call Dick Virgilio for his advice? I will send a longer note by email. I wish we were closer to be able to help. Love you guys!

  10. I’m glad you have such a comfortable & well appointed boat. Don’t forget to take care of yourself too!

    1. Thanks Michelle. We are quite comfortable here and I’m doing much better now. We just need to take things easy.

  11. WOW, I am so glad you all followed up and didn’t wait! I wondered why I had not seen any new information in your blog. Please know we are all thinking of you two and hoping he heals fast!

    1. Thanks Maridee. Yes, we are so lucky that the urgent care PA was so diligent and recommended checking into ER.
      Hugs!

  12. Hi! I have been following your fascinating journey ever since your stop at Shannon Hardware in Morgan City, LA. I have read all your blogs and look forward to them. I am sorry to hear about your hardships. I will be praying for Michael and that he has a speedy recovery.

    1. Thanks Mandy. He is getting better every day. He’s a pretty strong guy so hopefully he’ll be back to his “old” self shortly.

  13. I had a quadruple bypass two years ago, got the zipper. Welcome to the zipper club! We saw Scout when you were in Apalacacola, have been following you ever sine then. I am sure recovery will go well, keep the faith and God bless!

    1. Thank you. A zipper huh? Funny – he is definitely now a member of the “zipper club”. He’s getting stronger day by day.

  14. The long scar with all of the stiches looks like a zipper. Zippers wear it proudly, we are glad to be alive!

    1. Absolutely. Thanks for sharing and glad to hear you are well after the “opening”.

      1. Be nice to Mike it took me six months to get back to normal, but then I am 80 and he is much younger. Boaters are tough people and bounce back quickly 😎

  15. Very good to have a great place for care and a great outcome. We just got back from a road trip to visit friends in Arkansas. Very surprised to see such scary news. Wishing a quick and complete recovery for Mike. I hope you are well and up to the ‘Nurse Sharon’ challenge. Sending good thoughts, Greta

    1. Thanks so much. I’m not a very good nurse but trying. Haven’t put him in harm’s way yet.

  16. Wow! I thought something was going on when you
didn’t post. You guys have really been through it.
Thank God you got good medical care. You’ll be
in my prayers. Love to you and Mike, Snooki and
    Duke. Only clear skys ahead!
    Margo

  17. Oh my goodness Sharon, we are so sorry, but so grateful Mike was able to get the care he needed. We are sending healing thoughts for a full recovery. Give each other hugs from us and take care of each other. You are in our thoughts and prayers!
    Miss you,
    Ceci & Doc

  18. Wow! What an experience! Thank goodness you had such excellent medical professionals at your side. And Michael is so lucky to have you there with him. He has to feel at least a little blessed.

I’ve been really busy, but I read your most recent posts when I get a chance. Let us know how Michael’s recovery is going.

    1. Thanks Chuck, yes we do feel really blessed. Michael is getting stronger day by day. Docs say 6-8 weeks for recovery but Michael has always been an over-achiever so we’ll see. Miss everyone terribly….
      Hugs to you guys!

  19. Hi Sharon…
Going out on caravan today and thinking of you. Hope to hear that Mike is healing well and you are both strong and healthy.

Lots of friends sending you best wishes and love.

    1. Thank you so much! It’s wonderful to hear from you!

Michael is progressing nicely. Saw the surgeon this morning and he advised us that Michael has some fluid on his lung so they want him to go in and get that drained. Surgeon also said Bill Clinton had the same issue but his doctor didn’t drain him and he had to go back in later for a procedure to get drained. So we’re “one upping” Bill Clinton. Once that’s complete we’re hoping to get clearance to leave here by the end of the month – hopefully! We are certainly ready to get moving again.

      Sure miss you guys!! Hugs!

  20. Hi Sharon, just checking in to let you & Mike know we are thinking of you. Hope Mike is mending well. Think of you often especially on Thursdays! Take care & let us know how your getting along… 🙂

    1. Thank you Michelle. It means so much to us to have “back home” support. It was tough being all alone here and going through this rough patch. We so much appreciate the emails, texts, and calls with words of encouragement. Michael is getting better day by day. He had a procedure yesterday to drain the fluid from his lung – they took out almost a large mason jar full of stuff! Yuck! No wonder he was having difficulty breathing. He says he’s feeling much better today.
Hoping to be able to leave Stuart by the end of the month. Will keep you posted.
Thanks again for your well wishes!!!

  21. Haven’t heard any updates lately, hope Mike is continuing to recover from his surgery. One of our members is scheduled for the same procedure this Friday in Pensacola.

    1. Thanks Tom. Michael is doing much better. It seemed daunting at the time but they say they do hundreds of these surgeries and they’re no big deal. Maybe not to the doctors but it was to me!!! The good news is that they can fix the problem and get you back to a good healthy body. Best of luck to the member who will be going through the procedure on Friday. Our positive thoughts are with them!

  22. Thinking about you and hoping all is continuing to improve. I can only imagine how hard it would be to deal with this in a different location with no support.

    1. Thank you Greta – so nice to hear from you.

Yes, this was a scary time and lonely dealing with the situation in a strange place and not knowing anyone. But fortunately the medical staff and hospital was excellent which made us feel more comfortable. We were also in a marina that was just a $6.00 (plus tip) Uber ride away from the hospital so I could easily come and go.

Michael is getting stronger each day. We were hoping to be able to leave here by the end of the month but the doctor says No. Michael needs to stay on daily IV’s at least until June 12th. So looks like we’ll be here a couple more weeks. Things could be a lot worse – we are in a lovely marina with warm weather/water and enjoying boat life. A lot to be thankful for!!!!
      Hope this finds you well……

      1. Don’t worry Sharon, the loop will still be there! Glad to hear Mike’s making progress. Be well my friend!

        1. Thanks Michelle. You are right and I appreciate your kind words.
All the best! Miss you guys!
