Wow, we’re not alone anymore….
Pretty quiet couple of days In Apalachicola, Florida…..
Tuesday, 2/19/19 – Overcast today but warm which allowed for a number of boat projects this morning. About noon we looked up to see two boats pulling up to the dock right behind us. Yeah, we have company and they are Loopers! Both boats are Mainships – a 350 and 430. We are a 400. After helping them tie up we all went to lunch together. Karen and Bob aboard the 430 “Mo Whiskey” are from New Zealand and have just started their Loop journey. Gigi and Mark on the 350 “Miss Adventure” are from Arkansas and also just started the loop. After lunch another Looper boat came in. Charles and Mary Ann aboard Ann Marie Rose and from Virginia. Although not a Mainship they were still accepted on the dock :). Had a quiet rest of the day, bought fresh Mahi Mahi from the seafood market and had dinner on board.
Wednesday, 2/10/19 – Woke up to pea soup fog again today. We had planned to do laundry while we were here so yesterday Michael went to check out the only laundromat in town. He returned reporting – don’t think we’ll do laundry there. Said the place looked like it hasn’t been cleaned since it was built. He asked the only guy doing laundry in the place about his experience. The poor soul said “I spent eight dollars to find a washing machine that actually worked”. Later in the day our marina host George was checking up on us and we told him of the experience. He offered up a vacation rental apartment he owned with a washer and dryer so we could do laundry today. How nice is he??? On a side note, George also owns the original Apalachicola Marina which is about 1/4 mile east of our mooring. Its docks were wiped out by the hurricane. George told us he is having a hard time finding qualified contractors to rebuild the docks but he does still have to pay the state water lease. Guess there is not enough labor to repair all the damage done by Hurricane Michael. FYI: Boss Oyster restaurant is closed. Some of the guide books are still showing it open but it was also damaged by the hurricane. I headed back to the seafood market for crab cakes for dinner tonight. Boy, I’m going to miss this seafood market and this town. We loved spending some time here! If you are coming this way, do yourself a favor and stop for a couple of days and enjoy.
We plan to leave Apalachicola tomorrow morning for Carrabelle. The fog has been very thick the past few days but we’re hoping that it will lift enough for us to make the approximately three hour cruise…. a three hour cruise :). Carrabelle is the where the Gulf ICW ends and where we have to make the decision on how to cross the Gulf of Mexico. We can make an overnight crossing directly to Tarpon Spring or hop the “Big Bend” which would make our first stop Steinhatchee (pronounced STEENHATCHY) which is an 8.5 hour day. We think we know what that decision will be but we will wait to see what Eddie the weather guy has to say. He is the weather guru of “ the crossing”. Will keep you posted…..

Well Good Morning Scout from Sunny San Diego!
Sun today, snow yesterday – shorts today, snow chains yesterday. In any case all is well here and I’m in the patio with a Road Atlas in front of me looking at Florida and seeking a body of water that extends from South to North and the closest I come is Route 75. Please send me the name of some cities slightly larger than Apalachicola and Steinhatchee ( appreciated the comment on correct pronunciation).
Of humor, and with absolutely no connection to your trip, was something I ran across today as I was going through some paperwork.
You’ll recall our BVD(tight) partnership? This was a paragraph from the 4463-65 Castelar Sep. 1995 Operating Report:
“Of interest, I received a call from Mike Burrows, our tenant, and I was concerned that he might be moving out when he said he had some recent bad luck. It turned out that he had part of his ear bitten off by a Raiders fN as he was watching the game at Fast Freddy’s bar in O.B. He explained that in order to receive some money from the crime victims fund, he had to look like he needed it, therefore he wanted to pay three months advance rent. I accepted!”
So that’s all the news there is from San Diego for now.
