On Island Time….

On Island Time….

Last we left off, Thursday (2/27), we had just arrived at Bonefish Marina in Marathon, FL, and we’re still here.

We’re pretty much living the “Island Life”, slow, laid back and quiet. We’re enjoying spending time with our old-new friends and making new ones. We met Linda and Harry in Stuart. FL last summer and they came to Marathon on July 4th and never left. They live on their boat “Sophie” at Burdines Marina and say they’ve found home and don’t need to go anywhere else. On Saturday (2/29) we had them over for docktails and dinner aboard Scout and had a great time telling stories and catching up. Linda and I made a future date to spend the day in Marathon shopping, sightseeing, eating and drinking. Soooo much fun!

Melissa and Jeff, who gave us the head’s up on our great slip, and their dog Scout aboard “Flip Flop” came into the marina the day after we did. We have really enjoyed spending time with them. We invited them for lunch at Sparky’s (by dinghy) and ended up with nine folks enjoying lunch, drinks and conversation.  Soooo much fun!

Enjoying Lunch at Sparky’s in Marathon

The marina has card night every Thursday so, of course, I had to join in. They play “31”. Never heard of it but how hard can it be, right? The objective is to try to get 31 all in the same suit. You pick a new card as you discard one card – you can only have three cards. Anyway, the idea is that you need to beat as least one person to stay in the game. The person with the lowest number loses. They played two games. On the first one, I held my own and didn’t lose my three dollars until pretty late in the game. In the 2nd game I was the first to lose my next three dollars. It’s hard to explain but hopefully you get the idea. I plan to go back next Thursday to win my six dollars back….

Card Game

We also had to take care of personal things. Getting the doggies their meds, getting both humans eyes checked and getting new glasses, teeth cleaning, hair appointments and all the mundane things that go along with living. It’s more complicated when you can’t just go to the professional you’ve gone to for the last 40 years! Having to find new places to go and people to take care of you is interesting, to say the least. So far, so good.

At any rate we’re enjoying island life and plan to stay here for a while longer, probably until the end of this month. Marathon is pretty much the last stop before arriving in Key West. We haven’t decided if we will take Scout to Key West or just take the bus for about an hour ride. This month is Spring Break and we hear it’s a zoo with the young folks. Will keep you posted.

  1. 3/9/2020. Hey, great post and glad to see you’re only a semi-gypsy for the time being. I loved meeting and hanging out with new people. It’s fun to hear brand new stories! Only sometimes it’s sad when you meet someone you really like only to say “see you down the road” and know you’re really saying “I’ll probably never see you again.”
Guess where I am . . Bend, OR. Staying at your cute house. Just kidding, I’m up here with my sister. Her husband died and we’re cleaning out his house in order to sell it. A rather sad and fairly disgusting chore. But a spectacular piece of property – you interested?!
I just came back from Madrid. Terrific time to non-rev as you might imagine. Round trip airfare using my passes was $47.00 and that was business class , yippee! Absolutely beautiful city, I was definitely impressed and will return some day.
Terry Anglin at the YC submitted his resignation. Opening Day is coming up. Had dinner the other night with the people who bought Rigadoon and they told me it was sold and renamed. What a great name (thanks Mike!). I sold the Redmond duplex and Fred’s Dodge Durango, but still have Tapatai. Maybe I’ll said it over and meet up with you and bring doggie snacks. Keep having fun and making those good memories.
    Love you guys,

    1. Hi Penny,
Thanks for keeping me in the “Loop”..ha ha.
Yeah, it is so much fun meeting new people and you’re so right – about the time you get to know someone one of you takes off and more than likely won’t see each other again. Although we have been lucky to run into a few folks as we move along. That’s another reason for writing the blog – helps stay in touch with a few friends we’ve made along the way.
Wow, you’re in Bend? So sorry for the reason you had to go, but hope you get to enjoy it a little bit. You guys could use our house but we have guests coming in tomorrow. I would love to see your sisters property. If you feel like it send me some pictures.
Wow, again. Madrid and for $47.00! Did you go alone and Was there anyone else on the plane with you? You are such the Adventurer!
We heard that Terry was leaving. Wonder what happened. Have a glass of wine for us on Opening Day and play a Bingo card for me.
So the people who bought Rigadoon from Geryln sold it again? Glad they changed the name – that name was perfect for us and no one else! I thought you sold your interest in Tapati. But since you didn’t DO sail it over here – Snooki and The Duke and Mike and Sharon too will be waiting for you.
Can’t tell you how much I miss you!
      Hugs and kisses!!!!!

  2. Life looks pretty darn good in the Keys. Clean warm air! Harry and I are on a Pandemic cruise. Our primary physician thought it would be wise for us to get out of our 500 person, four tiered retirement home. So we are on our Ocean Alexander until the corona virus starts to abate. It is hard to believe we could catch anything moored at a SYC out station, with no one else here at the dock. When will you be starting north?

    1. Whoa, these are interesting times! We’re feeling pretty comfortable that we are not out among the hoards of people except when going to the grocery etc. Makes sense to enjoy a nice quiet, secluded life on your beautiful boat at the Yacht Club out station away from the masses. Hopefully this Corona Virus will settle down sooner than later.
We will probably start heading north when we leave here at the end of the month. Enjoy!

  3. Living the Island Life….Beautiful weather, beautiful water, beautiful boat…and NO PEOPLE…sounds like an Island Dream!

    1. Yeah, I’d say it’s pretty BEAUTIFUL!
After we talked I posted about the Iguana that came for a visit. I really do think it’s more than just a lizard:)
