Boats and Games…..
For those of you paying attention – I misspoke about our destination today. I said we were going to Morgan City when it should have been Shell Morgan. Got my Shells and Morgans mixed up. We go to Morgan City tomorrow.
Anyway…Up this morning about 6:30 to a beautiful sunrise……AND gunshot sounds. I forgot this is hunting country. Don’t know where they were but they were within earshot. Time to leave! Well after we have breakfast. When we tried to start the engine –nothing. Michael got the battery cables out – nothing. Checked several other possibilities to find that it was the spade connector on the ground wire for the starter solenoid that had vibrated off the thermal. Easy fix once diagnosed. Off we went at about 8:40.
Back cruising with the tugs and barges. No admonishments today, we got the ones and twos correct. For you nautical minded folks who might not know this – this is how it works. If we want to overtake a tug/barge/ship on our port side we call the captain on the VHF and ask if we can pass on the “one”. They usually say “come on, see you on the one” in Cajun language. Or if you’re meeting a tug/barge/ship and you want to meet them on our starboard you do the same thing and ask if you can meet on the “two”.
Ok..our second lock transition today. I called (on the phone) the lockmaster of the Leland Bowman Lock to try to get a heads up about what to expect. The lady lockmaster says to me – you don’t have a VHF you can call me on when you get close? Needless to say I didn’t get any idea of what to expect like is it a drive through, do we tie up, if so starboard or port, is there a strong current – nothing! Soooo I prepared – I got my big balls down from their perch, put on my rubber gloves, put on my life vest and unleashed my pole. I was so prepared, I even yelled at the dogs to stay out of the way!!! We got to the lock and the nice Cajun lady says we can go through once the tug exits. I still don’t know what to expect. As we get closer she says come on through and I realize it is drive through lock. No need for big balls, rubber gloves, or my pole. But I’m prepared for the next time…..
Our home for the night is just beyond the Lock – Shell Morgan Marina. It’s actually a commercial facility but they have a wall and allow two or three pleasure craft to tie up on a first come first serve basis for $25 a night. Luckily we are the only non-commercial boat here. By the time we got settled it was about 2:30. We took the dogs for a walk and looked for the local grocery store. The grocery store had a for sale sign on the building as did the small commercial building across the street. The hardware store was closed and so was the marina office. Oh well, it is Sunday. We decided to have a late lunch aboard. We do have wonderful ring side seat to the ICW – barges, shrimp boats (which we really haven’t seen traveling) air boats and even a helicopter landing on one of the local commercial boats, quite interesting! We switched between watching the play-off game (it is the Saints and we are in Louisiana) and the ICW boat parade.

Beautiful sunrise! Pictures are awesome!
Thanks to your camera. Love it and trying to learn how to use it.
Wow, it sounds like you two are covering a lot of ground & learning a lot of new ropes on the way. What an adventure. I’m glad you’re having fun & I’m really enjoying your blog & the pics. Snooki is quite the crew member!
Yea Michelle,
We are learning a lot and covering a LOT of ground. We actually stopped and are spending 2 nights in Houma. A little tired and needed a break. Snooki is quite the lookout. She loves the position on the bow where she can see everything. Unfortunately, Duke can’t see over the bow but he joins her often. We are having a blast. You should join us!
Don’t forget to report in at the 99 before Morgan City! Good dry run preparing for the real locks in New Orleans! Never been through Lebouf locks after Morgan City, only been South on Bouef Chene. Love your daily blog!
Thanks Maridee.
Yeah we did check in at the 99. A funny thing happened at the RR bridge. Michael called ahead on VHF to check in and traffic control said sorry the bridge is closed and I can’t get you to Morgan City only as far as the RR bridge. When we got in visual we saw the bridge was open so Michael called traffic control and said we saw the bridge was open – and asked -would it stay up. The traffic controller said yes he was sure it would – he’s been here a long time and it’s never fallen down yet. Michael replied, sorry, we’re not from around these parts. Traffic guy says “no problem, just messin with ya”
Interesting…We’re still in Houma. Leaving tomorrow for New Orleans.
Now that is funny! Normally no sense of humor! Did you say pleasure craft? I find that term funny….think about it! I bet the dogs love the park at Houma! Did you get a slip at Seabrook, or elsewhere?
Yes, they call us pleasure craft. The dogs did love rolling around in the grass at Houma. We are at Seabrook and think we will probably stay for a few days. Weather front coming in…
The boat next to us with green slime, for sale is the culprit for the diesel leak! They were fined!
Whoa, that’s amazing! Does it smell in your/our neighborhood now. Thanks again for all your help and notes. Couldn’t have done it without you.
Not anymore. They had to Pumpout and got fined and has to move the boat.
It is so fun reading about your trip! You used your big balls finally!
Glad to hear the neighborhood has been cleaned up. Yes, got to use our big balls a few times now. Thanks for letting us know we needed them! We are docked at Seabrook Marina where it’s blowing at 25 knots, gusting to 35! It’s a good think we are behind the storage shed or it would be very uncomfortable. Glad we made the decision to stay rather than move on……
Oh yes don’t do the Mississippi Sound with ANY WIND! It is extremely windy here, we are on the boat all weekend because Mark missed his baby… great timing!
Yep. We’re hunkered down probably til Tuesday morning. Are you in our old slip now?
No, Carol and Tom put their boat in there. We stayed in the same slip.
Cool.
